Phrases officials always use

Why is it that politicians, officials and spokesmen always use these phrases?

  • We are taking steps to…
  • …we’re looking at different ways to tackle the problem…
  • …the threat of collateral damage… (essentially a euphemism for hitting the wrong person)
  • This is a very rare occurence… (as in a rare cooked steak)
  • …we very much regret… (oh no you don’t)
  • The safety of the customer/public is paramount… (oh no it’s not)
  • We are looking into the options that we can take… (1. go to pub, buy Fosters 2. go to Starbucks, buy espresso 3. go home and make love to your wife)
  • …by taking precautionary measures… (we’d still be living in caves, going ‘ooh, it’s quite comfortable, this’)
  • …progress is being made… (we’ve ordered the stationery)
