I can’t stop laughing at the Derek Draper slow-motion car crash. Last weekend, The Guardian and the veritable Guido Fawkes (previously not exactly the best of friends after that Newsnight appearance) accused him of doing a Lee McQueen and… erm… producing inaccuracies on his CV.
Now, before the lawyer brigade sets in—and THIS I STRESS—I am not in a position to discuss these (albeit very serious) allegations. However, now Draper has accused Guido of racism because some commenters published slightly racist jokes on his Friday caption competition.
I’ve looked through Draper’s ‘dirty dozen’* of the comments, and to be honest, they’re no worse than something you’d see on Mock the Week. This is before we even begin to take in to account the fact that Guido didn’t actually write the comments.
For example, on this post I wrote, someone wrote this (totally irrelevant) comment:
Yes, every guy in England is a fucking faggot. That’s why the country sucks.
Now, I know that every man in England is not necessarily a ‘fucking faggot’, and I don’t actually think there’s anything wrong with being a ‘fucking faggot’. I don’t condone the comments, but I didn’t remove them either. (The commenters have been killfiled, and I’ll write up an entry for them in the dungeon as soon as I can be bothered.)
Perhaps even more hilariously, he’s now accusing Iain Dale and ConservativeHome of condoning racism for linking to Guido’s blog. That’s complete and utter bollocks too. Guido didn’t write the comments, he can’t take responsibility for them.
Just watching Draper respond to the comments from sane people on LabourList is hilarious. He can’t be bothered to punctuate properly, only responds to points that suit him and has still not responded to the accusation that this is merely revenge for the accusation Guido made.
I’m no supporter of Guido Fawkes (if we’re honest, he does snipe, often unnecessarily, at unimportant things) but I will not stand for slanderous accusations of racism such as this. That’s that.
* Because Draper is not getting any linkage or PageRank on my watch, this link has the rel="nofollow" tag applied.
