So what is this ‘blog’ thing anyway?

A blog, or weblog, is a form of website where the author (or authors) write articles which appear in chronological order (that is, the latest will appear first on the homepage).

How do I navigate around the site?

It’s just like a normal web site. You can search the site with the search box in the right panel. Alernatively, select a page from the navigation bar at the top.

Can I access the website on my mobile phone?

If you have a WAP-enabled phone, then yes! Just point your browser at crashedpips.co.uk.

What about my iPhone/iPod Touch?

iPhones and iPod Touches can, thanks to the fact that they use the Safari browser, access Crashed Pips in its native form. Point your browser at the usual address.

There are no plans to optimise the web site specifically for the iPhone or iPod variant of Safari at present.

What about my BlackBerry?

BlackBerries have not been tested yet. Please contact me if you do succeed in accessing it on a BlackBerry.

Stop f**king swearing!

I try to moderate swearing wherever possible. Be warned, however, that some moderate to strong language is used in quotes from another person (e.g. Steve “Monkey Boy” Ballmer’s “I’m going to [expletive]ing kill Google… [expletive]ing Eric Schmidt is a [expletive]ing [expletive].”)

How do I leave a comment?

At the bottom of each post, there’s a line that says “There are x comments”. Just click on this, and you will be taken to the comments section of the post page, where you can make a comment.

i love bloggers who moderate their comments, it’s the attitude of the desparetely insecure who need phony acceptance when they are, in fact, universally hated – truly the comforting lie

The reason comments are moderated is so that any spam can be caught before it is posted (not even Akismet is perfect) and so that amusingly awful comments (such as that made by the cretin who originally devised this question title) can be rescued from Akismet’s grasp.

Also, please remember that even though you may think you’re anonymous if you use a false E-mail address and name… you’re not. WordPress automatically captures your IP address, and, in the event of persistent spamming, or unconstructive, provocative comments, I shall be forced to take further action: including, if necessary, reporting you to your ISP and asking them to terminate your account.

Use of capital letters in the correct places reduces the probability that I will choose this course of action. In the event of idiocy, commenters may be sent to the killfile (warning: moderate language).

The social bookmarking links have gone, this sucks!

The social bookmarking links had disappeared for some time, but have since returned under the “Share This” button.

How can I be notified whenever there’s a new post?

You can use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to subscribe to Crashed Pips. Just select the feed from the list below, and point your RSS reader at it.

RSS is a technology that allows you to keep up with compatible websites using so-called ‘feeds’. If you’re using Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Windows Internet Explorer 7 or above, or Apple Safari, then consult your documentation for assistance on RSS feeds.

Alternatively, you might like to try Google Reader.

Technical information

The blog’s strings are pulled entirely by WordPress. Crashed Pips is presently authored primarily using Mac OS X Tiger on an iMac DV SE 450, and with Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope on an IBM-compatible PC.
